Sayre Says: OSCARS!

I don’t know about you but this time of the year is when things start going up… March Madness, end of winter quarter, oh and… AWARDS SEASON! Speaking of, if you didn’t watch THE ACADEMY AWARDS last Sunday, I don’t know why you read my blog… obviously you don’t love movies enough!

But before we start on THIS year’s Oscar’s, I’m going to recap LAST year’s Oscars. Reflect on the great films that were released last year and then I’ll post the award winners! Oh the glamour!

Last year there were quite a few fantastic films that were nominated. Some of the films that were nominated multiple times were: The Kings Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, The Social Network, and Inception.

Let’s recap:

(I have excluded a few categories, for the full list, click here for 2011 and here for 2012)

2011: 83rd Annual Academy Awards

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale in “The Fighter”

The first thing I thought of while watching this film and seeing Christian Bale in it was, “Was THAT Batman?” His transformation from the burly, buff and tough superhero to the skinny, struggling, drug-addicted brother of a boxer. And yes, he played the part. You see the desire in his eyes to help… but the destruction that his character also causes. You see their family fight (and fight and fight and fight) because of his actions. I was unsure on whether I liked him or disliked him. But one thing I knew was that Bale played the part juuuust right.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”

Although Melissa Leo’s performance in The Fighter was great, I still feel very strongly that Hailee Steinfield in True Grit should have won this award. Leo put everything she had in this film and you could feel it. She was pushy but motherly and stubborn but encouraging. That mix is no easy recipe. She can be one reeeeally angry and tough mother. I personally love when she starts throwing stuff at people.

Actor in a Leading Role
Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”

I don’t think that you can truly appreciate Colin Firth’s acting abilities until you watch him in this film. The plot of the film is the story of “Bertie” or King George VI as you may know. All his life, he has struggled with a speech impediment and now suddenly crowned king, he must now become strong for his country which is going through troubled times. Firth is absolutely incredible and the ending gave me chills. He is a character where you literally feel his pain and you, the viewer, try yourself to push him… help him… even to talk for him. The term “awkward silence” will have a new meaning after you watch this.
